Meet the amazing 'Fiddle Beetle", one of the strangest looking 'ground beetles' in the world!! It's a true curiosity without explanation or purpose to its unique 'fiddle-like' shape. Take a look at those antennae, so much longer than its body! And that body is paper thin, and transparent enough that you can read a book looking right through those smokey elytra (shell) covers! And a bit of trivia - years ago a Paris museum paid big bucks for a specimen when these insects were thought to be a great rarity! But in reality, they are just hard to find because they live in cracks and crevices under bark and in tree trunks, now they are predominantly farmed.
Ours are over 3.5inches long!
