This Blue Morpho butterfly is said by many to be one of the most beautiful butterflies in the world! Found only in the tropical areas of South America, its bright neon-like sky blue color is quite a dazzler. The underside of the wings are a soft, dull brown color dotted with several eyespots serving as natural protection (camouflage) from its predators. Truly astonishing, a must have!
His name, "Menelaus," comes from Greek mythology. In ancient myth, Menelaus was king Sparta, and when his wife Helen was abducted by enemies his kingdom was plunged into the Trojan War. King Menelaus is also a prominent figure in Homer's epic poems the Illiad and the Odyssey.
(*Morpho abdomens are removed by suppliers as they contain oil that can stain/ruin the beautiful wing colors. This is hardly noticeable when the beautiful wings are opened! Just a note, in case it's your first time buying morpho butterlies!)
