Neotibicen pronotalis , Walker's Cicada

The Walker's Cicada, this famous North American Cicada can be found from Alabama to Wyoming, and can be heard in the treetops from mid-late summer as males make their loud meditative mating calls to the females! This sound is actually produced by a powerful muscle on the underside of the male cicada called a "tymbal!"

Not to be confused with the 17-year cicada, these guys are bigger and have the interesting pattern on their back!
