Long before this moth became famous in the movie, The Silence of the Lambs (among several other movies featuring this moth) it has represented a symbol of death for hundreds of years. It is rumored that it was first sighted in Europe at the execution of King Charles I in 1649, and can be found in Asian and African folklore dating back hundreds or even thousands of years!
